The definition, or meaning, of cartography:

  • Merriam-Webster – The science or art of making maps.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica – Cartography, the art and science of graphically representing a geographical area, usually on a flat surface such as a map or chart. It may involve the superimposition of political, cultural, or other nongeographical divisions onto the representation of a geographical area.

The Cartography Lab is part of the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte. A lot of what is produced here is used in publications and teaching. Most of the work done here is primarily for the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, as well as other departments on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. However, the lab has also worked on projects for other universities, publishing companies both within the state of North Carolina and in other states, private companies and people within the community.
