Dr. Collins takes students to the Peruvian Amazon over spring break

Dr. Collins led twelve UNC Charlotte students in the Sustainability Field Study course over Spring Break in the Peruvian Amazon. Students gained an international perspective of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as they met with local elders from the Yagua and Maijuna villages to discuss how they measure and evaluate innovative sustainability practices in the jungle. Students participated in local activities demonstrating sustainable practices such as weaving palm leaves for shelter, visiting a local butterfly refuge, and visiting local schools and a local shaman. This experiential learning experience allowed students to reflect upon their own ways of living and how they compare and contrast to that of the local indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest.
