EEGS Graduate Students Show Off Their Research at the 25th Annual Graduate Research Symposium

Categories: News

Several EEGS Graduate students had the distinct pleasure of presenting their latest research progress to the university-wide community at the 25th Annual Graduate Research Symposium in Pop Martin on April 6, 2026 to showcase some of the incredible work that is ongoing within our department.

Presentation summaries are below:

Roger Riggin: Environmental Influences of the Chesapeake Bay on Convective Storm Morphology and Severe Weather Production across the Mid-Atlantic

Much of the population lives along coastal regions so it is imperative that we have a solid understanding of how severe storms interact with coastal environments to produce more timely and accurate life-saving warnings.

Melissa Harmon’s research examined the factors that impacted patenting and licensing outcomes for green and non-green innovation at UNC Charlotte. The preliminary findings include that inventors not only possessed the dynamic capabilities to shift their inventions’ field and funding sources in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, but these inventors also leaned on support from patent lawyers and the technology transfer office to secure patents and licenses for their inventions.

Anjumana’s reserach: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern due to the millions of deaths it causes annually. My research investigates light- activated silver nanoparticles, a non-antibiotic strategy, to combat with AMR situation. The purpose of this research is to find out the efficacy of the light-activated silver nanoparticles against resistant bacteria and applicability of this nanoparticles in real samples by evaluating the impact of environmental factors i.e., salt and protein. We found that light modulation enhance the efficacy of the light-activated silver nanoparticles. In addition, we observed some challenges in the presence of protein but it can be minimized by applying multiple light irradiation strategy.
