Assistant Teaching Professor in Sustainability Studies
The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in Sustainability Studies. This is a nine-month non-tenure track position with competitive salary and benefits, and is expected to begin on August 15, 2026. It is a three-year appointment with the possibility for renewal and promotion. We seek a dynamic and engaging instructor who can contribute to teaching and student mentoring in our new Sustainability minor, Geography and Environmental Studies degrees.
Required minimum qualifications are: (1) a PhD degree in Geography or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment; (2) the ability to contribute to undergraduate curricula in Geography, Sustainability, General Education, and programmatic advising; and (3) the ability to contribute to the Department’s interdisciplinary teaching mission. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching and community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
The successful candidate will play an important role in the Human Geography component of our undergraduate programs and general education offerings. The successful candidate is expected to teach: (1) introductory sections of Environment, Society, and Sustainability; (2) Foundations of Sustainability, and (3) courses within the overall Geography and Environmental Studies curriculum. Potential contributions to our new Minor in Sustainability and upper-level courses are also welcome related to the candidate’s area of specialization. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte undergraduate students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the University.
