Department mourns the passing of Dr. Wayne Wallcott, Professor Emeritus

With great sadness the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences announces the passing of Dr. Wayne Wallcott on April 11th, 2025. Wayne joined the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte as a PhD candidate from the University of Illinois in 1970. His primary research area was in Transportation Geography. After the establishment of the MA in Geography in 1973, Wayne was appointed as the program’s first Director of Internships. He succeeded in placing students with employers such as Duke Power Co., First Union National Bank, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. Dr. Walcott served as the Department Chair from 1989-99. In 1999, Wayne was appointed to the role of Senior Associate Provost, serving under both Chancellors Woodward and Dubois before retiring in 2008. During his term as Senior Associate Provost, Dr. Walcott helped guide the University through a transformative period of change that included the development of the Campus and Academic Master Plans that led to the establishment of the first UNC Charlotte doctoral programs and multiple capital construction projects. Over his career, Wayne has touched the lives of many students and colleagues. His kindness will be greatly missed.
