Categories: News

The Charlotte Heat Mappers, an interdisciplinary research team based in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Geographical Sciences, have been nominated for a 2025 Sustain Charlotte “Inspiring Nonprofit” award. Nominees are recognized for their efforts in advancing smart growth and sustainability in Charlotte. Dr. Katherine Idziorek, who leads the Charlotte Heat Mappers, was also nominated in the “Inspiring Individual” category. The Charlotte Heat Mappers won a grant to support a community science heat mapping campaign covering 100 square miles of Charlotte’s Urban Heat Island during the summer of 2024, which resulted in an interactive heat map of the city, summary reports in English and Spanish, and a publicly available GIS dataset. Nominees and award winners will be honored at a celebration event at Camp North End on Monday, April 28. More detail on the awards and nominees is available here.
